Burges Salmon launches BScale platform to support innovative new tech firms

October 8, 2021

An innovative technology platform to provide legal services to fast-growth companies in the tech sector throughout their life-cycle has been started by Bristol-headquartered law firm Burges Salmon.

Aimed at start-ups, scale-ups, founders and investors, BScale will offer a depth of knowledge to enable them to work through mission-critical funding rounds, the inevitable regulatory, tax, employment and commercial challenges that come with scaling a business, as well as the expertise to protect value when the time comes to exit.

As part of Bscale, Burges Salmon is offering companies a range of legal documents for free, which can then be created and downloaded instantly from a BScale Document Generator.

The BScale platform will:

  • Support high-growth businesses through the sharing of knowledge
  • Provide free-of-charge legal documentation through the BScale Document Generator
  • Provide high-quality legal advice at a price point that is realistic for early stage businesses
  • Enables Burges Salmon to build lasting and strategic relationships with the most exciting and innovative technology companies and their investors.

Burges Salmon corporate finance team director Alex Lloyd, pictured, said: “There is real value in high-growth businesses forming a long-term relationship with their lawyers.

“We recognise that we need to flex our pricing and invest our time, expertise and contacts on those early projects.

“We understand that is how we will build relationships with the most-promising and exciting scale-ups in our core sectors. This is why we’re launching the BScale platform.”

He said The BScale Document Generator would provide a suite of automated legal documentation suitable for use by start-ups at no cost at a time when they are operating under significant financial constraints.

David Varney, a director in Burges Salmon’s technology and communications team, pictured, added: “We are thrilled to launch BScale and continue to strengthen our relationship with emerging technology companies and their investors.

“BScale will enable us to grow with our technology clients as they scale and we are looking forward to forming strategic and long-term partnerships with some of the UK’s most innovative and progressive companies.”

Companies are able to use the BScale Document Generator to create the following legal documents:

  • Subscription and shareholders’ agreement
  • Articles of Association
  • Disclosure letter
  • Founders’ IP assignment agreement
  • Website terms of use
  • Website privacy policy
  • Website cookie policy
  • Employment contract
  • Confidentiality agreement

Investment group Octopus has worked closely with Burges Salmon for several years. Investment director Ed Fellows said its lawyers had proved themselves valuable business partners during a period of rapid growth.

“They have helped us navigate new investment sectors, as well as providing support, firepower and expertise in more established areas of our business,” he said.

Burges Salmon’s BScale team is drawn from across the firm and includes senior lawyers from each of its core practice areas with a particular focus on supporting high growth businesses in the technology sector.
