Which? crowns OVO as best energy firm for second consecutive year

Bristol-based energy supplier OVO has topped the UK’s biggest energy customer satisfaction survey for the second year running.

The annual survey, conducted by Which?, asked nearly 9,000 customers to rate their supplier across a range of areas including customer service and value for money.

The latest results come as energy companies come under increasing pressure from the government, Ofgem and Which? itself to stop overcharging and under-serving their loyal customers.

A recent Competition and Markets Authority investigation found that 70% of the so-called Big Six’s customers are on expensive standard variable tariffs. The Which? survey shows customers with the bigger suppliers get the worst service.

OVO said its five tariffs reflected wholesale and supply costs, and were “fair, transparent and as competitive as possible”. The firm also said it offered unparalleled customer service.

OVO Energy was formed seven years ago as a small, independent UK gas and electricity supplier based in Cirencester.

Today it has 675,000 customers – giving it 2.4% share of the UK domestic energy retail market – and employs 1,000 people – 900 in Bristol and 100 in London.

OVO Energy customer services director Justin Haines said: “We’re thrilled that our customers have voted us the top supplier in the UK once again.

“Unlike the Big Six, who inherited millions of their customers, every single one of our customers has actively chosen us because of our fair, transparent pricing and table topping service.

“We look forward to standing by our pricing principles despite aggressive pricing from competitors, maintaining the level of service that our customers have come to expect, and continuing to develop innovative, digital engagement tools for our customers.”

The latest Which? accolade comes hot on the heels of OVO being named Energy Supplier of the Year at the annual uSwitch awards last November.

The Big Six utility groups are British Gas, EDF Energy, nPower, E.ON, Scottish Power an SSE
