South Gloucestershire brewery Severn Vale Brewing Co is raising a toast to one of its beers, which has been named the best standard bitter in the country.

Nibley Ale, made by Severn Vale brewer Steve McDonald, scooped a gold award at the national BeerX run by SIBA (Society of Independent brewers), which pitches the country’s best ales against each other.

Severn Vale is part of Tortworth-based Combined Brewers – the result of the merger last year between Cotswold Spring Brewing Co and Severn Vale Brewing Co.

Combined Brewers managing director Mark Frankcom said: “We’re really thrilled Nibley Ale won. It’s a standard ale, at 3.8%, so is the type that can be enjoyed by everybody.

“It’s one of Steve’s best sellers and after this win we’re sure it will now sell a fair bit more.”

Also in the finals of BeerX was Aviator lager, created by Cotswold Spring. Both Aviator lager and Nibley reached the BeerX national final having landed top awards in their region, Wales and West.
