Outdoor clothing brand Trespass has opened a branch in The Galleries Shopping Centre, coinciding with the central Bristol mall’s £2m upgrade.

The Glasgow-based, privately-owned retailer, which specialises in surfing, hiking and snowsports clothing for men, women and children, has moved into a 5,800 sq ft outlet on Merchant Street South.

Trespass is using two of the unit’s three floors for trading, amounting to around 4,000 sq ft of retail space, with the top floor used as an office and for storage. The firm, which has 85 stores across the UK, has committed to a 10-year lease.

Renovation work at The Galleries, which opened more than 20 years ago, will involve relocating its food court to the middle floor, adding new customer toilets and creating space for a new anchor store.

The 340,000 sq ft centre, whose major retail tenants include Argos, Boots, Laura Ashley, TK Maxx, WH Smith and Waterstones, attracts around 11m shoppers a year.

It was acquired by InfraRed European Active Real Estate Trust – then part of HSBC Bank – in January 2011 for £50m. The name was restored to The Galleries, the centre having been called The Mall Bristol under previous owners Capital & Regional’s Mall Fund. It is asset managed by Hark Group.
