BDO, the national accountancy and business advisory firm, has strengthened its Bristol office with the appointment of Paul Falvey as tax partner.

Paul, pictured, has been based in Bristol for 17 years, most recently at Baker Tilly where he spent five years as a partner specialising in corporate tax advice. He has also worked at Grant Thornton’s office in the city.

In his new role he will focus on developing BDO’s mid-market offering to clients across the South West and South Wales, lead as head of manufacturing and focus on the tax issues of companies.

Paul’s arrival reflects a period of strong growth for BDO’s full-service Bristol office – it has recently taken an additional 6,000 sq ft at Bridgewater House to accommodate a planned 20% increase in staff numbers.

Paul said: “I am looking forward to leading the tax team and offering support to ambitious businesses looking to grow nationally and internationally. As the economy continues to pick up, we will focus on providing tax advice to companies looking to expand, helping them to deliver their strategy as well as assisting them in meeting their increasingly onerous compliance obligations.”

The mid-market is a core focus for BDO. Its recent research shows that South West companies in this segment create 21% of private sector jobs, contribute £65bn in revenue and £20bn GVA (gross value added) every year.

BDO has published its own Mid-Market Manifesto, a set of policies that it believes could unlock the potential of the mid-market, including a recommendation to temporarily reduce employers’ National Insurance for manufacturers, making tax simpler and fairer and encouraging them to export.

Audit partner and head of BDO in Bristol Andrea Bishop said: “Paul has a wealth of experience of the local market and will play an important role in helping us continue to reach new clients and prospects.”
