Annual turnover at Foot Anstey, the national law firm with an office in Bristol, has passed the £50m mark for the first time following an 8% rise in its 2021-22 financial year.

The firm said the increase to £53.5m was down to its focus on key sectors and “outstanding work” by its specialist teams.

The star performer was its Energy & Infrastructure sector team, which achieved a 22% year-on-year increase while its revenues earned by its market-leading Islamic finance sector rose 18%.

There was also a strong showing from its Retail & Consumer and Developer sectors – up 12% and 11% respectively.

Foot Anstey managing partner Martin Hirst, who took over in the role in April from long-serving managing partner John Westwell, said: “The results illustrate the continued growth being generated by our sector focus and the outstanding work delivered by our teams.

“We have bold growth ambitions and we are starting the planning for our next four-year strategic period, which we believe can fuel the firm’s success for many years to come.”

Foot Anstey opened its Bristol office 10 years ago with just 10 people. Today it has more than 160 out of the firm’s total headcount of around 600.

Its other offices are in Exeter, London, Plymouth, Southampton, Taunton and Truro.

Meanwhile, the firm has recruited Ali Allan from accountancy group PwC as its new chief financial operations officer (CFOO).

Ali’s appointment is the firm’s second key executive hire this year following the arrival of Felix Hebblethwaite from Linklaters in April as its new group HR director.

Ali, who starts at Foot Anstey next month, has more than 20 years’ experience in finance and operational roles. She joins from PwC Australia, where as finance director she was responsible for the financial management of the firm’s cost base and management reporting.

Martin Hirst added: “I am thrilled to be adding Ali to our team. It is an appointment that demonstrates the ambition we have as a firm.

“I believe we are putting in place an outstanding team of experts that will be pivotal in enabling the firm’s growth.”

Ali said: “It’s exciting to be joining a law firm with such a strong reputation in its market and as it plans for its next strategic period.

“The board and management team invested time to ensure I was comfortable with the ethos of the firm, its direction and with whom I would be working.

“I’m looking forward to working with its teams to help identify where they can obtain a commercial advantage to support their growth strategies and continue in delivering excellence to the firm’s clients.”
