Bristol lawyers and accountants have been praised for their roles in the acquisition of animation software firm Sparkol by its chief executive.

Zoe Taylor took over the 10-year-old company behind the VideoScribe whiteboard animation software last month.

It now aims to build on the success of VideoScribe with new products, a wider distribution network and additional sharing platforms.

The Bristol offices of accountancy, investment management and tax group Smith & Williamson and law firm Ashfords advised Zoe on the management buyout.

Smith & Williamson partner and corporate finance director Iain Lownes led on financial aspects of the deal while Chris Dyson, partner in Ashfords’ corporate team, provided legal advice.

Zoe said: “Iain Lownes was involved from day one and he and the team at Smith & Williamson and Ashfords were instrumental in getting this deal completed.

“The MBO will give us the opportunity to grow the business further and to continue to develop the exciting new products which are coming on stream.

“In a world where attention spans and engagement levels are low without visuals, our products allow users – whether they have a product to sell, a lesson to teach or a vision to communicate – to harness the importance of video to engage, inspire and motivate audiences.”

Iain Lownes, pictured above, said: “I am really pleased to get this transaction completed. Our firm has a strong focus on working with technology businesses in the local market.

“Bristol is one of the UK’s leading tech hubs and being located in the city has been a major factor in Sparkol’s development into a national and international success story. Now the business is well positioned for further global growth.”

Chris Dyson, pictured right, added: “We’re pleased to have worked with Zoe and her team in a deal that will enable the company to grow and move from strength-to-strength.

“We have a strong track record advising technology companies nationally and internationally, so are incredibly proud to support successful businesses like Sparkol within the thriving regional tech hub.”
