Bristol animation studio A Productions has sold its pre-school series The Musical World of Mister Zoink to Sky – a major coup for the firm, which is seeking to develop its own content as a key plank to a long-term growth strategy.

The series, which has been launched in the UK on Sky Kids and Now TV, is a fun series of shorts exploring music and rhythm in a playful and colourful way.

Produced for Sesame Studios, it has been directed by Mark Taylor and produced by Katherine McQueen - A Productions’ joint managing directors.

It was co-written by Mark with musician Ashley Slater, who also composed its upbeat score. The pair previously worked together on CBeebies’ animated children’s TV series Boo!

The Musical World of Mister Zoink introduces the concept of different musical sounds to pre-schoolers with a collection of animated characters including Hoot, Bops and The Octos. Together with Mister Zoink, they have a series of crazy musical adventures.

Mark Taylor said: “The world of Mister Zoink is a colourful, characterful and imaginative place where we have fun with sound.

“We are delighted that Sky has launched this show in the UK on Sky Kids so a new young audience can enjoy the musical adventures of this wonderful cast of characters.”

Founded in 1985 and now based across two studios in Bristol, A Productions makes iconic children’s content for TV and film for audiences in the UK and around the world.

It has grown rapidly over the past five years, providing animated content for broadcasters and subscription video on demand providers, including CBeebies, CITV, Channel 4, MAX and Sky.

These include JoJo & Gran Gran, which is produced by BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions for CBeebies, and Sesame Workshop’s first-ever animated special The Monster at the End of This Story.

Following French animation powerhouse Cyber Group Studios’ acquisition of a majority stake in the firm nearly two years ago, A Productions has been planning to develop its own original creator-driven content as a key plank in its long-term growth strategy.

Last month it appointed Katie Barba, an experienced development executive with Disney, as development producer to help grow its slate of kids’ and family entertainment.
