Pioneering aviation museum Aerospace Bristol has landed its second major architectural award in as many months.

The museum, which houses Concorde as well as tracing Bristol’s lead role in the history of powered flight, won the Leisure and Hospitality Project of the Year category at the Michelmores South West Property Awards.

The awards, staged by regional law firm Michelmores, recognise the best in commercial and residential property across the region.

The museum, which opened last October on a nine-acre site at Filton Airfield, won the highly acclaimed South West Project of the Year accolade at the RICS South West Awards last month.

It covers more than 100 years of aviation history and combines two First World War Grade II listed hangars with a new building that houses the last flown Concorde.

The museum was submitted for the Michelmores Property Awards by contractors Kier Construction and Hydrock. It was recognised by the judging panel for the boost it has given to the city’s visitor attraction figures.

Also scooping a Michelmores Property Award was the Redcliffe Parade project in Bristol, which was submitted by city-based architects Alec French.

It won the Residential Project of the Year (35 Units and Under) category for its restoration of a Grade II listed terrace and the repurposing of a 1970s extension in the Redcliffe Conservation Area and overlooking the Floating Harbour.

Other winners included Callywith College, Cornwall (Education Project of the Year), Nelson Project, Plymouth (Alternative Property Investment Project of the Year) and the National College for Nuclear in Cannington, near Bridgwater (Project of the Year).

The ceremony took place at the University of Exeter and was hosted by comedian and actor Josh Widdecombe.

Michelmores head of real estate Emma Honey said: “Once again, the standard of entries we received for the Property Awards was outstanding.

From a cutting-edge nuclear training facility in Somerset to a residential development that rehabilitated military veterans through a self-build training programme in construction skills, the range and breadth of projects has been fantastic and has demonstrated the excellence of the property and construction sector in our region.”

Michelmores has offices in London, Bristol and Exeter.
