Timber and sheet materials specialist Avon Plywood has been acquired by larger competitor Sydenhams for an undisclosed sum.

Keynsham-based Avon Plywood, which was established in 1983 as an importer of wood-based materials and timber into Bristol, is now one of the UK’s largest suppliers of its kind.

It specialises in an extensive range of cut-to-size, machined and edged sheet materials, as well as supplying timber and mouldings. It is also a stockist and distributor for Valchromat coloured fibreboard and Tricoya Extreme MDF. It will continue to trade under the Avon Plywood name.

The sale, financial details of which have not been disclosed, also includes its premises at Pixash Lane.

Sydenhams has been in business since74 when it was founded on a site in Poole which is still used to import timber. Today it operates a network of 29 branches across the South of England and Channel Islands, including in Bath, which supply timber and building materials.

The group also owns a specialist timber engineering business and has 10 hire centres and showrooms selling kitchens, bathrooms and flooring.

Solicitors from Bath-headquartered regional law firm Royds Withy King’s corporate, commercial property and employment teams advised Avon Plywood shareholders on the sale of the business.

Paul Williams said: “Having grown the business with the support of our loyal staff and customers over many years, we were looking for an opportunity to expand our product range and geographical reach and we are very pleased to have been able to achieve this by joining Sydenhams.”

Royds Withy King’s corporate advice was led by senior associate James Worrall while commercial property advice was delivered by associate Sarah Goodridge.

James, pictured, said: “Royds Withy King has worked closely with Paul, Chris and Avon Plywood for a number of years so we were delighted to be able to pull together a multi-disciplinary team to advise them on all aspects of the company’s sale to Sydenhams.

“Both companies are independent, family-owned businesses so there is a natural synergy between the two which, together with their complementary products, can only enhance their position in the market and add value to Avon Plywood’s substantial customer base.”

Sydenhams managing directors James and Charles Sherborne said they were delighted to welcome the team at Avon Plywood into the Sydenhams Group and looked forward to being able to offer new and existing customers a wider range of products and services.

Sydenhams was advised by Bournemouth-based law firm Steele Raymond. Royds Withy King also has offices in Swindon, Oxford and London.
