Bristol’s Royal West of England Academy takes a radical departure this weekend by launching Jamaican Pulse: Art and Politics from Jamaica and the Diaspora.

The first exhibition of its kind outside of Jamaica – and a show with true international scope – this important new exhibition starts tomorrow and runs until September 11.

Coming at a time when Jamaican art is receiving growing international acclaim, Jamaican Pulse will celebrate and showcase the extraordinary diversity and legacy of Jamaican art, presenting contemporary work alongside key pieces from Jamaican art history.

Co-curated by Kat Anderson and Graeme Mortimer Evelyn on behalf of the RWA, it will span multiple disciplines including painting, sculpture, photography, textiles and moving image, and will be supported by artwork from a number of public and private collections, including the Jamaican High Commission, London, and The National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston.

The Arts Council’s support of this ambitious exhibition points to both its international importance and local significance.

The Jamaican High Commission has confirmed its support as an official exhibition partner and will be engaging Jamaican communities and businesses in Bristol and across the UK.

The Jamaican High Commissioner Aloun N’Dombet-Assamba said: “The Jamaican High Commission is pleased to be an official partner of the Jamaican Pulse exhibition.

“Our country’s impact on the global stage through music and sport is well documented so we welcome the opportunity that this exhibition will provide to showcase the work of Jamaican artists.

“I am confident that Jamaican Pulse will help to cement the cultural relationship between Jamaica and Bristol and leave a lasting legacy.”
