Educational and community theatre group Brave Bold Drama has unveiled its first permanent base, dubbed Creative Workspace, in Withywood, South Bristol.

This major step forward for the theatre company comes just weeks after it was named winner of the Arts category in the Bristol Life awards.

Set up in 2013, Brave Bold Drama tours productions and workshops to children’s centres, schools, community centres, care homes and more. Its creative output covers plays, film work, music and more, spanning all age groups.

Brave Bold Drama, which was registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) last month, now hopes to expand its outreach and community work from its permanent base.

The theatre group, run by former drama teacher Gill Simmons, will offer Arts Award courses and workshops at Creative Workspace for the benefit of all the local community.

Gill said: “We want Creative Workspace to become somewhere that, during the day, theatre makers are working in all forms of performance.

“After school, we hope to see teenagers coming through the door to do their Arts Awards – now we have a building it’s so much easier to support that. Arts Awards are a great way for teenagers to prove their skills and foster their creativity and build a great portfolio of work.

“Then, in the evening, we’ll be welcoming adults’ community groups. From 9am until 10pm we want to see a stream of different people coming to use the space, any person of any age is welcome to come here to explore their creativity and enrich their lives.”

Prior to moving into its permanent home, Brave Bold Drama toured productions and workshops all over Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.

Past projects include Alf the Highwayman, which was originally commissioned by Bristol Autism Support and went on to win Best Children’s show at the Shaftesbury Fringe 2016, The Investigators, a set of scientific street theatre shows for Bristol Bright Night commissioned by the University of Bristol Centre for Public Engagement, and devised children’s show Fade Away, a joint venture with The Unimaginables Theatre Company which was staged at the Ustinov Studio, Bath Theatre Royal.
