Bristol’s Filwood Green Business Park has achieved a top sustainability rating, recognising it as a leading environmentally friendly building.

The site received its latest BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, placing it as one of the most environmentally friendly industrial buildings in the UK.

BREEAM is the world’s leading assessment method for establishing the eco-friendly credentials of buildings. It is a method that is used around the world on all types of buildings and building projects.

Filwood Green Business Park forms part of the wider Knowle West Regeneration Framework, a plan that has been devised to bring jobs and investment to one of the most deprived areas of the city.

The business park is contributing to this plan by providing affordable, environmentally friendly office and workshop space for small businesses to base themselves from. So far the park has 22 businesses making use of 25 units ranging from security firms to design companies.

Anthony Smith of family run electrical trade recruitment business AJS Supplies, based at the business park, said: “We moved to Filwood Green Business Park to expand our small family-run business and have been delighted with the facilities we have access to.

“Moving into the offices has meant we have been able to take on new staff and contribute to the social investment this park makes in the local economy.”

Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson, said: “Filwood Green Business Park is a great example of combining good contemporary architecture with a strong social and environmental agenda. Achieving BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ was an ambition set out by supporters of the development and sets expectations at a very high bar. To receive this award is great credit to the team who run the site and the partners who have come together to plan and build this unique development.

“Tailored to new and growing small and medium-sized enterprises, the comfortable and attractive working environment with low running costs and a Work Hub area designed to facilitate interaction. Filwood Green Business Park provides the best possible support to this growing sector of the economy, and acts as an economic catalyst in an area undergoing major regeneration.”

The rating comes as the business park was also competing for an industrial building of the year award at this year’s BREEAM awards in London but despite presenting a strong case to the judges, it lost out to ECOstyle Warehouse, Oosterwolde, in the north of Holland.
