West small and medium-sized businesses are today being urged to unlock trade opportunities in South Korea at an event near Bristol.

The seminar, staged by the Government’s export body UK Trade & Investment, is designed to help businesses explore the potential in one of the world’s most-exciting markets.

At  today’s event between 10.30am and 3.30pm at Leigh Court, Leigh Woods, delegates will be able to meet face-to-face, network with and hear first-hand from South Korean experts in business, political and government fields, including the British Ambassador to South Korea Scott Wightman.

Breakout sessions will include an overview of the market and key factors for success. There will also be focused discussion groups on the specific opportunities in food and drink, creative, media and design sectors.

In addition, representatives from British businesses already operating in South Korea will be attending to share their insights into doing business there and will also be available for one-to-one meetings with delegates.

Cheese maker Lye Cross Farm, based at Redhill, near Bristol, is already tasting success in South Korea.

Sales in this market grew by 50% last year. With market insight and support received from UKTI, Lye Cross Farm was able to showcase the brand and educate trade and consumers about cheese and production methods.

Lye Cross Farm head of collaboration Tim Harrap said: “Nothing beats actually taking time to visit and explore Korea even when you already have business there. You can’t escape the energy and drive there – they’re keen to do business and there are always new opportunities. There is such a strong interest in Britain and its culture so our imported products are sought after by consumers.

“Koreans are also great to do business with. They’re direct and know what they want, they’re good at making decisions and sticking to them but at the same time have a real attention to detail.”

UKTI South West international trade director Russell Jones added: “As the 12th largest economy in the world, South Korea is a dynamic and vibrant place to do business, boasting a 50m strong domestic population that is wealthy, savvy and out to buy the best.

“With the introduction of the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement and a passion for UK goods, this country ranks among the most fertile overseas markets for British companies of all shapes and sizes.

“Delegates registering for Opportunity Korea will also have the chance to book one-to-one meetings with a number of the trade experts in attendance. This is a unique opportunity to better understand how your products and services fit into the market and to address any specific concerns.”

Opportunity Korea is free to attend. For more information or to book a place, visit http://www.opportunitykorea.ukti.gov.uk
