Near double growth rate puts Bristol environmental firm among world leaders

Bristol-headquartered environmental consultancy Eunomia Research & Consulting is celebrating nearly doubling its revenue and staffing over the past five years.

The 94% growth rate has made Eunomia, which was founded by chairman Dominic Hogg in 2001, one of the world’s leading environmental consultancies with 105 employees across three continents working with national governments, international NGOs and global corporations as well as small and medium-sized businesses.

As well as its Queen Square head office, the consultancy also has offices in London, Manchester, Brussels, Athens, New York and Auckland.

Since its launch it has expanded its offering from waste management to include air quality, climate change, renewable energy, the natural environment, and sustainable business.

The two latest additions to the wide scope of its work are a team of climate emergency strategy specialists and a new sustainable future transport service.

Eunomia said its international growth had been driven by a progressive benefits package and commitment to continuous learning and development which has resulted in those moving overseas choosing to set up offices for the business rather than leave it.

Its first overseas office was established in New Zealand in 2008, followed five years later by its first European office in Brussels, where it continues to produce high-level research for the European Commission.

The first US office opened in New York in 2017 and has been growing as it develops its offering to the US states and Canadian provinces, as well as foundations and corporations.

Its second European office opened in Athens in 2018 in part to prepare for Brexit – UK firms bidding for contracts with the European Commission and some other European institutions following the UK departure from the EU will need to be headquartered in a member state.

The team in Athens is already appointing staff and working with blue-chip organisations in Eunomia’s specialist areas.

The consultancy has also benefited from local support, including the £75,000 funding it received from the West of England Growth Fund in 2014.

Dr Hogg, pictured, said: “We are fortunate to have had fantastic support along the way from regional funds, which helped us to grow in number and in influence.

“We’ve moved from primarily UK-based work to conducting influential projects on the international stage, and we couldn’t be more proud of our roots here in Bristol, the city where I was born.

“We plan on building on our current momentum to take on ever-more challenging projects, ensuring that our work helps alleviate a climate crisis, improves air quality, enhances the natural environment and achieves a more circular economy.”

In 2018 Eunomia was appointed to lead an EU-wide project to look at how products ranging from toys to cars and chemicals to furniture can be made, transported and disposed of more sustainably.

It has also worked with FIFA, the world football governing body, on a project to ensure that artificial pitches are as ‘green’ as possible by investigating the different types of materials used in artificial turf across the globe and assess their environmental impact.
