Bristol architects Childs Sulzmann, the practice behind many iconic buildings in the city such as the Arnolfini, Engine Shed and Watershed, has been sold to its management.

Founding partner Nick Childs, who launched the practice 28 years ago, has handed over control to directors Mike Cox and Matt Parsons in a management buyout handled by Bristol law firm Ince Metcalfes.

The firm, based in the recently renamed Beacon Tower – formerly Colston Tower – has been a key player in the sector both regionally and nationally for more than two decades, working in sectors ranging from the arts, media and leisure to residential and hotels.

It has also played an integral role in showcasing Bristol’s architectural talent as well as working on many of the city’s best-loved buildings.

These include Bristol Cathedral Choir School, The Royal West of England Academy, and Pero’s Bridge as well as the Engine Shed innovation hub and media centre Watershed, with which it is has worked for more than 20 years and is behind its latest ambitious expansion plans, pictured.

Outside of Bristol it has carried out design work for household appliance giant Dyson, Norland College in Bath, Thornbury Castle and Bulstrode Park Hotel, an exclusive luxury five-star country estate hotel development in Buckinghamshire and one of the most expensive hotels outside London.

Nick Childs, pictured, who will continue as a consultant at the firm, said: “Mike and Matt have been on the board at the firm for over five years, and it became apparent early on that they were the perfect duo to take up the mantle and lead the firm into its next chapter.”

Mike Cox added: “Matt and I are delighted to be taking on the leadership of the firm and build on the legacy Nick has created.

“The firm has a reputation for providing clients with exceptional architectural design that we are passionate about continuing.

“The calibre of our clients is a testament to our team and enables us to work on exciting projects across the South West and further afield.”

The Ince Metcalfes team working on the deal was led by managing associate Edward Chapman and included partner and head of employment David Baynton and associate Lydia Cammiade.

Edward added: “Working with Mike and Matt has been a great experience and I look forward to watching their latest projects launch in the coming months and years. The management buyout is aimed at ensuring continuity and provides a strong future for the business.”

The management team was advised on financial and tax matters by Pete Edwards at Bristol accountants Corrigan Accountants. Nick Childs was advised by James Hawkins at Bristol law firm Meade King Solicitors.
