UWE Bristol and Watershed have launched a master’s course in creative producing, inspired by the internationally-recognised work of the Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio creative hub.

Starting this September, the course has been developed in response to the growing demand for ‘creative producers’ in the creative industries, spanning film, theatre, music, digital, visual art, installation and publishing.

The course will incorporate working placements with key arts, digital and tech producers in the South West and an opportunity to produce a creative project.

Taking inspiration from Pervasive Media Studio’s projects encompassing all forms of creativity – cultural or commercial and from games and robotics to interactive documentary and immersive theatre – the course will cover all aspects of the creative journey from formulating the idea with creative teams, to funding, project management and evaluation.

The MA programme is aimed at emerging producers with a professional interest in traditional art forms and digital technology, providing a pathway to a career in innovation in the cultural and creative sectors or a step towards further postgraduate research.

There will be 10 places on the course – two of them 50% subsidised placements for black and minority ethnic (BME) students, supported by the Stephen Lawrence Trust.

The MA is designed to be flexible, and can be run full-time over a year, or part-time over two years. The course is split equally between class time and placements with established creative organisations.

Jon Dovey, professor of screen media in the Department of Creative Industries at UWE, said: “We are excited by the opportunity that our new MA will offer, which will offer students access to the brightest and most ambitious producers in the South West.

“For those with their eye on a possible career as a producer, this will provide a valuable springboard. We will support new producers to make the most of Bristol’s creative industries, which are overflowing with ideas and talent, and now needs people with the drive and know-how to take the sector forward.”

Watershed creative director Watershed, Clare Reddington added: “I am delighted that the Pervasive Media Studio is collaborating with UWE Bristol’s practical and critically focused Creative Producer MA.

“The creative producer is an increasingly sought-after role. The course has been designed and taught by leading figures in the field, and will introduce students to the many and varied facets of the subject, as well as providing much-needed training in the skills required to bring bold, new, ambitious projects to life.”
