Business West has urged firms to get involved in the construction and operation of EDF's Hinkley C nuclear power plant.

The massive scheme in Somerset received planning permission earlier this week – although EDF has not said it will go ahead and build the plant as it is still in talks with the Government over guaranteed prices for the power it produces.

Managing director managing director Business West Phil Smith, said: “British business is clear that nuclear power is a vital ingredient in the UK's long-term energy mix. Planning approval for Hinkley C is a major step in the search for energy security and a huge opportunity for local businesses.

“The construction phase alone is likely to create over 20,000 new jobs with a further 900 permanent jobs on the site itself. The supply chain benefits to local business will be significant and it is important that local companies sign up and register their interest as soon as possible.”
