Bristol’s International Balloon Fiesta has been shortlisted as a finalist for the UK’s Best Tourism Event of the Year Award.

As a finalist, the Fiesta is guaranteed to receive the Gold, Silver, Bronze or Highly Commended Award in the category at the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2012, which take place on May 22 in Leicester.

The Fiesta, which takes place between August 9 and 12 at Ashton Court, has already scooped a gold in the Tourism Event of the Year category in the South West Tourism Awards earlier this year.

Fiesta chairman Chris Hathaway said: “It’s a great achievement to be shortlisted and we’re delighted to be considered as one of the best tourism events in the UK.

“As a non-for profit event we could not succeed without the backing of our visitors, partners, 100 Club members and suppliers so we’d like to thank everyone for their continued support.

“This is exciting news for the Fiesta and for Bristol. This recognition goes to show that the Fiesta is not only an iconic event for the city but increasingly for the rest of the country.”

Visit England received a record breaking 392 applications for this year’s Excellence Awards.
