Bristol boutique law firm Cook & Co Solicitors has appointed former Burges Salmon managing partner Guy Stobart to its advisory board.

Guy, who will adopt a non-executive role at the firm, will provide guidance on growth, strategy and governance as well as acting in an ambassadorial capacity with clients and contacts.

The move marks a return to the Bristol legal market for Guy, who as managing partner at Burges Salmon oversaw growth in annual revenues from £10m in 1995 to £68m in 2008.

After leaving Burges Salmon he became chief executive officer at Kennedys, an international law firm headquartered in the City of London. During his five years as CEO, Kennedys’ turnover nearly doubled to £128m and among his other achievements were five successful mergers and new office openings.

Cook & Co managing partner Charles Cook said the appointment came at “a very exciting time for the firm, which is in a growth phase and is being disruptive in the traditional Bristol legal market place”.

Guy Stobart added: “I am looking forward to working with Cook & Co. There are opportunities opening up for law firms who are prepared to be innovative in their approach to the way they are structured and the way they deliver their services.

“It is these aspects of Cook & Co that particularly attracted me to them. I am looking forward to helping them in the next phase of their development.”

Bristol executive search firm Moon Consulting facilitated appointment. Director Vanessa Moon said: ‘It was a pleasure to work with both Cook & Co and Guy Stobart. We are delighted that Guy is joining such an innovative and respected law firm.”

The Cook & Co advisory board is chaired by former Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and Bristol City Football Club chief executive of Colin Sexstone. Colin is currently non-executive chairman of Pure Sport Hospitality and the Bristol Sports Partnership.

Cook & Co was founded in 2008 by Charles Cook and Vicki Neath to offer commercial, property and private client legal services, particularly to entrepreneurs, owner-managed businesses and high-net worth clients.

The firm, which has grown organically since, has an Alternative Business Structures (ABS) license and operates as a limited company. It has adopted a policy of recruiting senior and well-established solicitors who have active client bases.
