National law firm DWF has recruited Simon Stuttaford, former general counsel and company secretary at nuclear waste recycling and disposal firm Energy Solutions, as a partner in its national nuclear energy team.

Based in Bristol, Simon, pictured, will help develop the firm’s expertise across the energy sector both nationally and internationally. Prior to joining Kent-based EnergySolutions four years ago, he worked for a number of top 50 law firms including Bristol-headquartered Burges Salmon and K&L Gates.

In his role as general counsel, Simon was engaged on a large number of high-profile projects across the UK and Europe dealing with the decommissioning of nuclear sites, the transportation of nuclear material and the clean-up of legacy nuclear sites.

Bringing a strong background in environmental law and specialised knowledge of the key commercial and regulatory issues affecting the global nuclear decommissioning industry, Simon will help support DWF’s team as it expands its nuclear offering.

He has also advised on acquisitions strategy and commercial projects and has engaged with industry associations and authorities, including negotiations with the Nuclear Decomissioning Authority, on a wide range of policy issues including insurance and intellectual property.

He said: “DWF has a cutting-edge energy team that is making a real impact in the sector, and their strong client base and ongoing investment in the team has positioned them for further growth. I look forward to seeing how we can deepen relationships with existing clients and further develop the services we can provide.”

DWF head of nuclear Chris White, who joined the firm last December from Pinsent Masons, added: “Simon’s track record in successfully advising on highly complex issues and engaging with contractors and suppliers will make him a strong addition to the team, where his combination of commercial and litigation experience will significantly strengthen our national energy practice and allow us to deliver greater value to clients.”
