A new leadership team has been announced by the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS), the Bristol-based not-for-profit digital engineering consultancy, following the decision by its chief technology officer to retire this summer.

Prof Ian Risk’s departure in July after five years in the role has provided the opportunity for CFMS to review its senior leadership structure to ensure it is best positioned to support the digital transformation of high-value engineering projects across a wide range of sectors that are critical to the UK economy.

Based on the Bristol & Bath Science Park, CFMS has pioneered new approaches to digital engineering, largely in the aerospace, automotive and other sectors since its launch in 2010.

It has used its world-class modelling capability to automate designs for folding wingtips to improve aircraft efficiency, simulate flood events to optimise defences, save millions in construction costs, and optimise production-line inspection using artificial intelligence to improve quality.

It has also helped improve the design and performance of the the HS2 high-speed rail link now under construction between London and Birmingham and the country’s biggest infrastructure project.

Sam Paice, pictured, has been promoted from chief operating officer to chief executive officer after 10 years with the organisation while Guy Johns, who was promoted to chief technologist last year, will join its board to support it in implementing its long-term plans.

CFMS chairman Iain Grayn pictured, said: “Ian Risk has made a huge contribution to the growth and success of CFMS in recent years, evolving our cutting-edge technical vision and realising our strategy for growth.

“We are sorry to see him leave us, but after a 40-year career driving innovation in the aerospace sector, we wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement. I am delighted that Sam has agreed to take on the CEO position and look forward to working with her and the team for the next chapter.”

Sam Paice added: “I’m delighted to take up this new role at such an exciting time for CFMS as we embark on our next stage of growth.

“The organisation has a strong track record in supporting the development and advancement of digital engineering in the aerospace sector, helping to drive efficiencies and shape important industry and global initiatives, including the journey to net zero.

“More recently, our teams’ experience and expertise in model-based engineering, data science, advanced simulation and computing is helping other sectors, including automotive, infrastructure and defence.”

Ian Risk added: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work at CFMS over the last five years, seeing our efforts reflected in steady company growth and operational resilience throughout the pandemic.

“CFMS has improved its technical capability, broadened engagement across a range of industries and now has the solid business foundations to go from strength to strength. I am privileged to have been part of this process.”
