THE start of work on North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College’s (NSETC) new campus has been marked by a turf-cutting ceremony.

The development, at Weston-super-Mare’s Junction 21 Enterprise Area, will be the UK’s only new-build enterprise and technology school in an enterprise area.

It will feature a three-storey building with science, technology and enterprise spaces, and a dedicated all-weather sports pitch, sports hall, canteen and lecture theatre.

The new school is part of a new multi-academy trust, Inspirational Futures Trust, which is being led by the Weston College Group with representation on the board from North Somerset Council, North Bristol NHS Trust and the University of the West of England.

Representatives of Weston College Group and North Somerset Council gathered for the event.

Principal and chief executive of Weston College Dr Paul Phillips said: “At long last the concept of NSETC at  Junction 21 is becoming a reality.

“This moment sets the scene for the transformation of this plot of land into a place for innovative, work-related learning.

“It also reinforces the partnership between Weston College and North Somerset Council, and recognises the massive work we have done with the Department for Education to make this development possible.”

North Somerset Council leader Cllr Nigel Ashton added: “We are very proud to be associated with Weston College in this development.

“It is fantastic for Weston-super-Mare, and we are committed to continuing our partnership with our outstanding college as it expands its university offering, with all the benefits that will bring to the town.”

NSETC is a specialist 14-19 free school with a sixth form described as ‘a new model of learning’. It opened to students last September, and has a focus on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), combined with a strong business ethos in which enterprise is incorporated into the curriculum.

It is presently located at the South West Skills Campus at Weston College and will transfer to the new campus in September next year.
