Alternative Bristol law firm Stephenson Law has hired commercial litigator James Pheasant as director and head of dispute resolution.

James, pictured, who has joined from Carbon Law’s Bristol office, specialises in complex commercial disputes, representing clients in a broad spectrum of matters, including disputes with suppliers, customers, shareholders and business partners.

He also has particular expertise in sports regulatory work and represents athletes and horse trainers in anti-doping cases.

He is ranked in respected legal sector guide Chambers & Partners for his horseracing and equestrian work (band two, UK-wide).

James spent nearly three years as a partner at Carbon Law. Prior to that worked for more than 10 years in Bristol-headquartered national law firm Burges Salmon’s dispute resolution team as a senior associate.

He trained at London firm Charles Russell, joining its commercial dispute resolution team on qualification in 2004.

Stephenson Law founder & CEO Alice Stephenson said: “It’s great news to have James join us. Being able to offer litigation services will broaden and deepen how we can work for existing clients and also make us more attractive to new clients who want a ‘one-stop shop’ service.

“He has a great reputation and track record and is a familiar face to hundreds of our clients and contacts already as he recently joined us for our weekly open Q&A webinar on Covid-19.

“The feedback – even before he was officially part of our gang – was that his advice was clear and something that people could act on. That fits perfectly with how we work for clients.”

James added: “I’m a great believer in serving clients in the best way possible and what Alice and the team have achieved in a pretty short timeframe at Stephenson Law is impressive. There’s a buzz in the market about the firm and it is something I want to be a part of.”

Stephenson Law, which launched in 2017, describes itself as a ‘next-generation’ law firm providing fast-growth, entrepreneurial businesses with strategic advice and support on variety of day-to-day legal matters.
