Bristol hospital charity Above & Beyond has relocated its headquarters for the first time in 28 years in a move that means its 30-strong team are now working in one of the city centre’s top office buildings.

The charity, which raises funds for eight city centre hospitals and South Bristol Community Hospital, had been based in the historic Abbot’s House hidden away behind the city centre hospital complex’s Education Centre.

The move to Whitefriars, pictured, on Lewins Mead means the charity is still within striking distance of the city centre hospitals it fundraises for but now its staff can work from modern, open plan accommodation. The landmark building includes an onsite gym and café.

The charity was advised by the Bristol office of regional property agents Alder King on the deal to take a 4,807 sq ft suite on the sixth floor of Whitefriars on a 10-year lease.

Above & Beyond CEO Paul Kearney said: “The new office will provide our team with a much more productive and professional working environment from which to coordinate our fundraising plans, as we embark on an exciting new phase of growth and innovation.

“With the support of our trustees, it was particularly important to find a location that provides a pleasant and effective working environment. Alder King provided excellent advice and evaluation support throughout the search and completion process.”

Alder King office associate Tom Dugay said the choice of Whitefriars was a straightforward decision as the accommodation met all the charity’s key search criteria of location, size and layout.

“Remaining close to the BRI and the central hospital network was a fundamental requirement and of course Whitefriars is just a few minutes’ walk away,” he said.

“The suite is also larger than their current office and is open plan so provides more effective space than their current accommodation in the Abbot’s House.”

JLL and Hartnell Taylor Cook represented Whitefriars landlord Topland in the transaction. Other occupiers in the building include charity Clic Sargent, insurance group Zurich and professional services firm Radius.

Above & Beyond was founded in 1974 and raises around £3m a year to make a real difference to patient care and the hospital experience.

It does this by creating welcoming environments, providing the latest equipment, supporting staff training and development, and funding innovative research.

Its current appeals include Cancer Research in Bristol, Stand by the NHS and Ward D603 Refurbishment.
