Bristol and Portishead law firm Burroughs Day has left the QualitySolicitors branded national network of law firms after seven years.

The 180-year-old firm was a founder member of QualitySolicitors, the UK’s biggest single name legal network law with around 60 members.

Burroughs Day said it had decided to become independent again, becoming an LLP and reverting back to its original name.

The move also coincides with its relocation to modern offices in a historic Grade II listed building in Queen Square.

Burroughs Day is the latest in a string of firms to quit the QualitySolicitors network, with some commentators casting doubt on whether it can survive in its present form. Membership is understood to have fallen from around 100 firms to close to 60.

Senior partner Hugh Balchin said: “The time is now right for Burroughs Day to build on its own long-established, excellent reputation in the West Country, rather than being part of a national umbrella marketing network.

“We have always been client-centred and independent. Our new brand reflects and embraces those long-held values.

“This is an exciting new chapter for our partners, staff and clients. They will benefit from the dynamism and innovation that we have within the firm.”

He said Burroughs Day, which employs around 100 people, had enjoyed the visibility that came with being a national brand, adding: “As a founder member of QS, we helped drive client-friendly initiatives such as more accessible opening hours and transparency on fees.

“Burroughs Day is still committed to improving the delivery of legal services, and will continue to develop this.”

“We have enjoyed a close working relationship with QS over the years and wish them all the best for the future.”

The move leaves the QualitySolicitors network without a member firm in the Bristol area.
