Burges Salmon acts for Bristol City Council as it brings waste collection in-house

Burges Salmon, the Bristol-headquartered law firm, has advised Bristol City Council on the transfer of its waste collection and street cleaning to a new, wholly owned business.

Bristol City Council and contractor Kier (formerly May Gurney) mutually agreed to end their existing £96m contract in June less than half way through the seven-year term.

Council bosses claimed the amount of waste going to landfill had increased rather than decreased as they had hoped.

The services are now being provided by newly formed, council-owned company Bristol Waste Company, which took over the contract last Saturday. All employees, vehicles, equipment and facilities have been moved across to the new company.

The multi-disciplinary team from Burges Salmon, which included lawyers from its commercial, corporate, environment and employment units, advised the council on the strategy for delivering the waste contract. This included setting up the Bristol Waste Company, advising on its existing contract with Kier and on the exit strategy and negotiations.

The new system will operate for a year while the council looks in full detail at the best long-term service model.

Legal director Stephanie Rickard, pictured, who led the Burges Salmon team, said: “We are pleased to have advised our long-standing client Bristol City Council on this important transition, which will provide Bristol residents with much improved waste collection and street cleaning services.”
