The UK’s best tax team in a law firm is based at Burges Salmon in Bristol – according to Taxation magazine’s national Taxation Awards 2011.

Teamwork, innovation and service excellence were all major factors in the team's success. Led by partners Nigel Popplewell and John Barnett, it was singled out for its "innovative use of technology which allowed them to solve the problems that other advisers could not," according to the judging panel.

Among the examples given was the creation of proprietary client calculators and elsewhere the development of bespoke online training modules for a major banking client, following radical regulatory tax changes affecting UK resident non-domiciles.

Nigel Popplewell said: “It is our wide-ranging, eclectic client base and the quality of our work that makes our tax practice stand out from those of other law firms. Naturally we are thrilled to have the calibre of our work recognised at the Taxation Awards, which are the gold standard of excellence within the tax sector.”

The firm’s core tax practice consists of six partners and 17 lawyers, with many recognised as leading individuals in their field – including Beatrice Puoti-ffiske and Michael Evans. The team advises on tax planning, investigations and disputes, and handles compliance matters too on all taxes including capital gains tax, corporation tax, income tax, inheritance tax, national insurance contributions, stamp duty land tax and value-added tax.
