Bristol Rovers have been taken over by the Jordanian Al-Qadi family, the League Two club confirmed today.

Jordanian Football Association member Wael Al-Qadi has been named club president and the family has acquired a 92% stake in Rovers.

Wael Al-Qadi told BBC Radio Bristol: “I’m a football man, I’m very passionate about football, I consider myself like the fans and I want what’s best for this club.

“This football club requires and needs a new stadium. Once we are ready to go ahead with that project, we will.

“There’s a lot of work that has been done, but I have to come in and verify or make sure everything is in order, 100%, before taking the next step.”

Former Swansea City chairman Steve Hamer – who led the Welsh club between 1997 and 2000 – replaces Nick Higgs as chairman. Current directors Barry Bradshaw, Chris Jelf, Colin Sexstone and Ed Ware will also stand down.

The club – eighth in the table and just one point outside the play-off places – have played at the 11,916-capacity Memorial Stadium since 1996, with a proposed move to a 21,700-seat stadium delayed by a lack of funds.

The Al-Qadis have interests in the tourism and banking industries. Wael attended Westminster School in London.

Mr Higgs who steps down after eight years as chairman, called it a momentous day in the history of the club.

He said in a statement: “Bristol Rovers can count itself as being very fortunate to attract the interest of Mr Al-Qadi and his family.

“We know that Wael and his advisors had looked closely at other clubs, but they explained to us that they were drawn to Rovers because of the massive potential the club has, both on and off the field.”

Supporters club directors Ken Masters and Brian Seymour-Smith will stay in their roles.
