Renishaw, the innovative advanced engineering group, and Everything Environmental, the ethical promotional gift company, have been shortlisted in this year’s National Business Awards.

Wotton-under-Edge-based Renishaw, where annual pre-tax profits recently soared by 203% to £80.4m, is among firms in the mid-cap category, sponsored by accountants and business advisers Grant Thornton and which is open to firms with a turnover of up to £500m.

Everything Environmental, based in Winford, which was set up in 2005 and provides the widest range of eco-friendly and ethically-sourced promotional products in the UK and Europe, is one of 10 companies competing for the ICAEW Sustainability Award.

Renishaw has achieved marked success in international markets, particularly China which is now its largest market. Its core skills are in measurement, motion control, spectroscopy and precision machining.

Among the other finalists in the category are Cheltenham-based fashion retailer Supergroup, Cineworld Group, Majestic Wine, moneysupermarket.com and Rightmove.

Nigel Morrison, managing partner at Grant Thornton in Bristol, said: “Renishaw and Supergroup have shown how much can be achieved during what is an extremely challenging period for UK businesses. Despite being global brands they have their roots firmly in this region, and are a credit to it. Both fully deserve their nomination in this year’s National Business Awards.”

Richard Spencer, ICAEW’s head of sustainability, said: “It is excellent to see a fairly small business like Everything Environmental demonstrating that opportunity abounds in sustainability, and that sustainability isn’t all about ‘not’ doing things but taking positive action.”

The awards will be presented at a gala dinner at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, on November 8, where Chancellor George Osborne will deliver the address.
