Two of Bristol’s top tech disruptors will line up against some of the world’s most innovative businesses in a major new award scheme.

YellowDog and Blu Wireless Technology are competing in the inaugural 2018 UK Business Tech Awards, which will be presented in London next month.

YellowDog, which has been shortlisted in the ‘Tech Company of the Year – Small’ category, has emerged as one of Bristol’s star tech businesses and among the UK’s hottest scale-ups, going from a standing start in January 2015 to employing 21 people and working with some of the world’s leading companies.

Through its unique technology, YellowDog securely harnesses underutilised computer power, enabling organisations to deliver incredibly quickly and cost effectively, through leveraging this unlimited power on demand.

Founder Gareth Williams says he wants to create a world where people do more, create more, discover more; unleashed from limited computing power. The firm is no stranger to awards.

Its nomination in the UK Business Tech Awards recognises is disruption in two global marketplaces – media & entertainment and financial services. In a world in which the average enterprise server utilisation is between 5% and 15%, some 30% of servers deployed into data centres are turned on and then never used. YellowDog’s innovative technology re-addresses this, releasing compute for companies and connecting them securely to the cloud for unlimited resource.

Gareth Williams said: “I’m thrilled to see that once again, our advances in technology are being recognised by this latest award nomination. This year has seen the launch of our offering for financial services as well as continued growth for our cloud render service in media and entertainment.

Meanwhile, Blu Wireless – which has become a market leader in 5G – is competing in the Best Use of Tech category for its multi-Gbit mmWave wireless communications systems.

The firm, which has offices in Japan and the US as well as its Bristol headquarters, has pioneered technology in a number of emerging communications markets. It is involved in multiple projects with some of the biggest global names in telecoms.

The 18 award categories in the UK Business Tech Awards shine a light on companies, individuals, applications, and hardware, with an independent panel judging hundreds of nominations. Other categories include eCommerce Company of the Year; Tech Company of the Year; Data Pioneer of the Year; and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

The awards, which are staged by technology magazine BusinessCloud, will be presented at a gala dinner on November 20 at London’s Montcalm Marble Arch Hotel.
