The likely impact on Bristol of the Government’s controversial Localism Act is the theme of a major conference in the city tomorrow.

Staged by the Constructing Excellence Bristol Club, the event entitled Local Heroes will outline the implications of the 2011 Act and look at how it will be interpreted by the city.

The conference will be led by Bristol Mayor and former RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) president George Ferguson. Other speakers include director of Initiative and Chamber for Business West James Durie, and Cllr Guy Poultney, city council executive member for home, planning and regeneration.

Questions to be debated will include What impact will the Act have on planning consultation? What level of commercial rates will be reinvested in the City? How much power will individuals in Bristol have in decision making? Will local authorities have genuine autonomy? Are they strong enough to make ‘difficult decisions’? Will bureaucracy be reduced? How will the Community Infrastructure Levy be affected in Bristol?

Constructing Excellence Bristol Club chair Kevin Hibbs said: “The 2011 Localism Act, which provides local governments with new freedoms and flexibilities, has been open to interpretation and the conference will provide an open forum to discuss how this can benefit Bristol. This is a key event for those involved in the construction industry to shape the future of this city.”

The conference takes place at the Watershed between 8.30am and 2pm.
