A Bristol-based market researcher and business consultant specialising in China and other fast-growing markets has been appointed to the board of the Bristol and West of England China Bureau.

Pete Read, chief executive officer of Global Growth Markets, has taken up the voluntary post of director of market insights – a new post on the board of the Bureau, which works to connect the people of Bristol with the people of China, particularly Bristol’s sister city of Guangzhou.

Mr Read has led hundreds of assignments for many of the world’s most successful companies to high-growth markets. Global Growth Markets is a business research and market information database company helping international medical equipment and healthcare technology companies succeed in challenging growth markets.

Having advised many Western companies looking at opportunities in China since the early 1990s, as well as major Chinese corporations as they expand internationally, he has first-hand experience of both sides of the country’s phenomenal growth. He lived in Asia for 17 years before relocating to Bristol in 2013.

Bureau chief executive Dianne Francombe said: “It is fantastic to have someone with Peter’s experience on the board. He has helped many British firms with their market strategy in China and has a wealth of knowledge that will help us with our aim of ensuring Bristol and the West Country is well-placed to benefit from the opportunities now being presented in China.

“Doing business with China has unique challenges that business people in the West Country have to take on board. That is where we can help by putting people in touch with those, both in China and here in the UK, who can help with all aspects of the process.”

The Bureau’s Chinese New Year Banquet takes place this evening at Zen restaurant, Harbourside. A full report and photos from the event will appear on Bristol Business News later this week.
