None of us exists in a vacuum. Throughout our daily lives we interact with other people – with varying levels of intensity.

But always, we are working and living alongside people who influence us in a million different ways. Making the most of these interactions is how we can improve our success and even bring about the happiness and wealth that we dream of in our personal and working lives.

Why is collaboration so important?

Anyone who has been to a job interview will have been asked “are you a team player?”. The ability to share ideas, to work with others and to be confident in a group setting is seen as important in the workplace and there is a very good reason for this.

The old adage that two heads are better than one really does ring true. The more ideas that are in a room, the more likely you are to find solutions to problems that will bring about the desired results.

An element of competition will also bring out the best in some people. Seeing the success of others can be enough of an incentive to push you forward and reach your own goals. This is why a mentoring system is such an important part of large corporations. They recognise that having lofty goals will encourage employees to work harder. Knowing you can achieve more than the next person will spur you on.

People like collaborators

That guy in your office who keeps all his ideas to himself is probably not asked to attend lunchtime meetings or social events. No matter how good you are at your job, if you are not liked and respected you will never become a true part of a collaborative team.

People who share their wealth of ideas, who are happy to let others take the limelight and who realise their success is rooted in the success of others are the people who are popular. They are the people who do well within organisations, as entrepreneurs and in their own personal lives.

Collaborating is an essential part of success and happiness. Both in your private and work life you need to feel confident that you have a team around you who help you to make things happen. If you haven’t found it yet, we suggest you consider one of our events to get networking today.

Derrick Royall is an independent financial advisor with nearly 20 years’ experience and founder of the Royall Wealth Club, the innovative community launched last October to bring together successful people from all walks of life to meet, share and develop their personal goals around wealth, lifestyle and wellbeing.

Inspirational speakers from a wide range of backgrounds share their experiences and knowledge at its quarterly meetings.

A full report of its most recent event, called Change Your World By Changing The Way That You Invest, will appear in next week’s Bristol Business News e-bulletin.
