A Productions, the Bristol-based animation firm, and its French majority owner Cyber Group Studios have started production of their first new series since the two announced their tie-up in January.

Digital Girl, described as an adventure-comedy superhero series, has been Commissioned by the BBC and pre-sold to Super RTL in Germany and Discovery Kids in Latin America.

The series is being made in Bristol by A Productions’ award-winning Old Market-based team, which boasts a strong reputation for producing award-winning children’s content for many major UK and US broadcasters and streamers.

Paris-based Cyber Group Studios has helped secure international presales financing for Digital Girl and has been attached to the series as the worldwide distributor.

Aimed at kids and set in an ecological city of the future, the 26-part series is expected to reach screens across the world in late 2024.

It follows two 13-year-old best friends, Chrissie (Digital Girl) and Bella (Hack Girl), in their struggle to dominate digital networks to protect the world and their families and ensure their own future while leading normal teenage high school lives.

The production will benefit from Cyber Group Studios’ new FX and real-time technology to create breakthrough new content.

A Productions joint managing director Katherine McQueen said: “We are thrilled to have begun production on this new action-packed animated series, featuring two teenage girls who will inspire and entertain young audiences as they go on an epic adventure.

“It joins a fantastic roster of shows that our talented creative team is currently working on, so we’re very much looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”

The series has been created by Cyber Group Studios chairman and CEO Pierre Sissmann.

He added: “This is a show kids will easily relate to. The dual themes of everyday high school life and the excitement of the newest technologies will resonate with viewers, while the series’ action-packed adventure and storylines with humorous twists and turns will surely keep them entertained throughout.”

Digital Girl is co-written with Sylvain Dos Santos (DronersImago) and head writer Rebecca Hobbs (Sadie SparksJade Armor). Pierre Sissmann previously created Cyber Group Studios’ award-winning Gigantosaurus series as well as Zorro the Chronicles and Taffy

Cyber Group Studios was founded in 2005 and has two production studios in France, one in Singapore, an office in Los Angeles and two strategic partnerships in Russia and China.

Founded in 1985, A Productions has worked with some of the world’s most iconic characters, with notable productions including JoJo & Gran Gran for CBeebies – the first UK pre-school animation to centre around a black British family – Love Monster and The Tweenies for CBeebies, and The Monster at the End of This Story, Sesame Street’s first-ever animated special for HBO Max.

Cyber Group Studios acquired its majority stake in A Productions in January for an undisclosed sum. The deal will involve them collaborating on new content for a global audience.
