Bristol businesses are being urged to support a new campaign day to promote the city’s independent traders – appropriately on the US Independence Day.

On July 4 businesses and shoppers will be asked to show their support to the Bristol Independents campaign, which was launched last year and is supported by members of the Bristol Food Network, independent traders and Bristol City Council.

Jane Stevenson from the Bristol Independents Campaign said: “The fourth of July is a great day to check out some of the wonderful independent businesses in Bristol.

“Bristol’s independent traders help make our city different from any other.

“They’re also what makes Stapleton Road different from Gloucester Road, or Park Street different from Christmas Steps. So this Independents Day, why not celebrate by shopping independently – by exploring a different high street in the city, or by trying out an independent shop, cafe, bar or market stall where you haven’t shopped before.”

Businesses can become involved by:

Becoming a Bristol Independents Ambassador for your high street, and get other traders involved. Use the Bristol Independents branding on websites and in print. Tell other people that you’re getting involved

Organising something special – no matter how small. This could be a special offer only available to people quoting “Bristol Independents” when they shop, or make a booking. The Bristol Independents Campaign will include it in city-wide promotion

Displaying a Bristol Independents poster in your window to show shoppers you support the campaign, email bristol.independents@gmail.com or download from www.bristolindependents.co.uk

Raising the campaign’s special flag on your high street. Let the Bristol Independents campaign know if you have a suitable flag pole.

Anyone who shows evidence of shopping with an independent trader is automatically entered into a prize draw to win more local goodies. There’s also a prize for the trader who has the most entrants to the competition.

Cabinet member for communities Cllr Guy Poultney said: “Bristol has many vibrant high streets and markets with dynamic independent traders. But in this challenging economic climate, we must do all we can to support them and this is why I welcome the work of the Bristol Independents Campaign and I urge businesses and shoppers to get behind their 4th July campaign day.”
