Tom Sharkey, a partner at Bristol law firm Barcan+Kirby, has qualified as a Notary Public.

Tom, pictured, heads the Court of Protection team at the firm. His qualification means he has added another component to his legal expertise as he joins the oldest branch of the legal profession in England and Wales.

He can now certify legal documents and authorise signatures on documentation for use abroad, including matters relating to a number of areas of law including conveyancing, workplace immigration, probate and Power of Attorney for individuals and companies.

Tom joined Barcan+Kirby in 2001 and specialises as a Court of Protection solicitor where, using his vast level of experience, he has represented the needs of the vulnerable. Last year he was one of the first 30 lawyers appointed to the Law Society’s Mental Capacity Panel of Experts.

He is a member of STEP, the organisation that works with families facing difficult issues relating to inheritance and succession planning, and he holds the STEP Advanced Certificate in advising vulnerable clients.

Tom said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting new clients and helping them deal with either their business or personal affairs abroad.”

Barcan+Kirby managing partner Bill Willcocks added: “Many congratulations to Tom for this prestigious achievement. Over the years, he has shown unwavering commitment to his clients and the legal profession.

“Businesses and individuals across the region will now also be able to call on his expertise as a Notary.”

Barcan+Kirby has six offices across Bristol and South Gloucestershire providing advice to individuals and businesses across the South West and nationwide.
