Some of Britain’s top-rated Scrabble players will be minding their Ps and Qs at the Doubletree by Hilton Cadbury House hotel in Congresbury for a four-day contest starting on Good Friday. It is the first time the venue has been asked to host the prestigious 2012 Easter Scrabble Weekend.

General manager Colin Badcock, pictured, said: “We will be pushing the boat out as the Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) represents hundreds of fans from all over the country. The organisers got in touch with us when their previous venue fell through and we are determined to make the most of our chance to make this one of the highspots on the Scrabble world’s calendar. Cadbury House is an ideal venue for groups of this size and we are determined guests enjoy a few nights on the tiles with us.”

Formed in 1987, the ABSP is a not-for-profit association which holds tournaments all over the country to promote the nation’s third favourite board game. Organiser Ronnie Reid said Cadbury House ticked all the boxes as a venue for the popular national tour. He added: “With between 40 and 70 contestants playing one another and strict rules regarding the acceptability of words played, we’ll be using a specially written computer programme to work out who has won what.”
