Businesses backing the Bristol Young Student of the Year Awards have been helping young people in the city prepare for the workplace by developing their employability skills.

Apprenticeships have been high on the news agenda following National Apprenticeship Week last week and the Awards are a clear demonstration of how young people can make full use of their talents and abilities to come out as winners in the toughest jobs market for a generation.

The Awards’ objective is to give young people real business experience so that they can develop their communication skills, gain a better understanding of customer needs and be well placed to compete for an apprenticeship or other career opportunities.

Working in teams, 16 and 17 year olds from state schools, colleges and academies across Bristol are engaged in the task of developing iphone apps for local organisations including the Bristol Community Festival and the Bloodhound Project.

This has involved attending client meetings, writing marketing proposals, and presenting their app designs to their clients – all great experience for the world of work. And staff at many high-profile Bristol businesses have been giving up their time to help. For example, the BBC’s Bristol newsroom staff gave the teams a masterclass in how to present.

Bristol Young Student of the Year competition winners will receive their awards at a ceremony hosted by The Mall at Cribbs Causeway on March 26 in the Bristol Fashion Week pavilion.

The organisers promise an exciting programme including music, entertainment, fashion show, and presentations on major developments in Bristol alongside the glittering awards ceremony.

Bristol Business News is proud to support Bristol Young Student of the Year Awards as media partner.
