National law firm Foot Anstey has been named Fintech Law Firm of the Year 2022 at a prestigious specialist awards scheme – thanks to the efforts of its Bristol-based Islamic finance team.

The Islamic Finance News (IFN) Law Awards celebrate and honour the best firms operating in the sector and represent the current strength of the Islamic finance market landscape.

Foot Anstey was shortlisted against firms MAQ Legal and K&L Gates.

The awards recognised the team’s work with Nomo, part of Bank of London & the Middle East, as well as Nester, a London-based property fintech platform on what is believed to be the first UK peer-to-peer Islamic finance fintech deal, and digital home finance provider StrideUp.

The judges described Foot Anstey as “right in the thick of it with its work for Nester and StrideUp”, referencing its work with Nester on the development of the fintech platform’s products, as well as the tax treatment of these products in the UK.

They also noted that the work “supported the entire Islamic fintech space by resulting in a reconsideration by His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs and expected amendment of the current rules”.

Foot Anstey partner and head of Islamic finance Imam Qazi, pictured, said: “This is amazing news. To be awarded this accolade is a tremendous honour and reward for our team’s dedication and excellence.”

Islamic finance is one of Foot Anstey’s six key sectors along with development, energy & infrastructure, private equity, private wealth and retail & consumer

The firm also has offices in Exeter, London, Plymouth, Southampton, Taunton and Truro.
