Techmodal, the Bristol-specialist tech consultancy acquired by defence giant BAE Systems a year ago, has won a two-year contract worth up to £8.3m with the Royal Navy.

The firm, which was launched 15 years ago by two students and now employs around 150 people, will create a data science delivery cell with the Royal Navy’s Digital Services (NDS) division to help it become a fully digital organisation by 2023.

The cell will work with NDS and DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) data scientists to provide the Royal Navy with operational advantage and will drive a digital culture.

Techmodal employs market experts, data scientists, consultants and systems analysts at its offices in Queen Square and London and works on contracts with defence, industry and public sector clients, including the MoD.

Its work with the Royal Navy will be underpinned by support and knowledge transfer from industry experts such as Adarga, Capgemini, Geollect and Rebellion Defence.

This team is centred on Techmodal’s expertise and track record of delivery, creating a cutting-edge transformative data science provider that can be relied on to deliver at scale.

It will offer NDS agile delivery with specialist artificial intelligence (AI) analytics, cyber expertise and geospatial intelligence knowledge.

Techmodal already has a number of long-term contracts with the MoD in support of the UK’s armed forces, particularly the Army, Strategic Command and Royal Navy.

It uses organisations’ own data to transform their operations from the trained state of their people or condition of their vehicle fleet to the efficiency of their supply chain,

Techmodal managing director Gareth Vaughan said: “Winning this work is a fantastic outcome for the Techmodal team. We are looking forward to getting stuck into tasks that will rapidly deliver lasting benefit to the Royal Navy by unleashing the potential of their data.”

BAE, which has major interests in Bristol, including naval vessel design and hi-tech communications, said it acquired Techmodal as its expertise complemented its own digital, data and technical services capabilities.
